What will Joe Cole offer to Liverpool?

It may have come as a surprise to some that Joe Cole, the hottest English property of this summer’s transfer window opted to join Liverpool, becoming new manager Roy Hodgson’s first signing. Cole was being courted by both Arsenal and Spurs, both of whom could offer him the gift of Champions League football whilst allowing him to stay at his London home. However Cole announced this week that Mersyside is to be the next stage in a career that has so far spanned West ham United and Chelsea, as well as 56 England Caps.

Joe Cole was a child prodidgy who Harry Redknapp once said he would have given anything he wanted to sign him for West Ham as a teenager. Sign for West Ham he did, his local team, and he progressed to an early league debut before rumours circulated that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was ready to pay £10 million for his services when he was just 16. Sir Alex and his Scouting network would have been well aware of Cole back from an England youth match against Spain when he bagged 7 (SEVEN) of England’s 8 goals that day.

So Cole’s stock was high as a youngster but whilst trophies flowed for the versatile midfielder at Chelsea (3 Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and 2 Charity Shields), you have to feel that the early hype that led to Paul Gasgoigne comparisons have not quite been met. Knee and cruciate ligament injuries have not helped his cause but a succession of managers have been reluctant to give Cole the freedom he craves on the pitch, particularly from a central role. Oft Cole has had to be disciplined from the left side of a midfield and offer defensive contributions to the team that has stifled his natural attacking instincts.

So can we assume that his move to Liverpool, a Liverpool very much in transition after a relatively poor league season, no Champions League football and an uncertain future under Roy Hodgson, is a move based on footballing decision and a sign that the Kop may offer him the footballing role he craves?. From Hodgson’s point of view, Cole is the quality of signing that may tip the balance of persuasion in keeping star players Fernando Torres and club captain Steven Gerrard at the club. For Cole he may see a central attacking role, alongside Gerrard, one based on increasing creativity and the supply of chances to Torres.

Anfield is no stranger to a player who drops off a front man, pertinently Cole will pick up the famous number seven short worn with pride by Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalgleish in that role. This move will finally offer Joe Cole the chance to fulfil his early promise, he is more guaranteed a starting role at Liverpool than he was at Chelsea, and would be at Arsenal and possible even at Spurs. Importantly for Joe, Hodgson’s European background will make him more at home handling a player of Cole’s abilities and Hodgson is less likely than most to stick him on the left wing and make him spend more time tracking back than hurting team’s in the final third. Cole and Liverpool look a very good fit.

Manchester United Hope for Another Win at Biggest Rivals

Manchester United head to Anfield to face their biggest rivals Liverpool, in the first big clash of the new season.

After some less than impressive performances in the opening games of the season, Liverpool take on their arch enemy in a game which should give an indication of how close Rafa Benitez’s side is to finally winning the top league in England for the first time since 1990.

Even though their performances against Sunderland, Middlesborough and Aston Villa have been poor, Liverpool still have seven points from a possible nine.

And with the potentially explosive strike force of Robbie Keane and Fernando Torres, there will be a lot of money going pouring in for a Liverpool victory. However, these spread betters will have to consider one amazing statistic – Benitez has yet to see a Liverpool player score against United!

Liverpool did score against United in the Premiership in Benitez’s first game in charge against United but that was a John O’Shea own goal at Old Trafford back in September 2004. You have to go back to the 2001/2002 season to find the last time that Liverpool beat United at Anfield in the league, when two goals from Michael Owen and a John Arne Riise goal were enough to cancel out a David Beckham strike.

In their opening game against Sunderland they failed to sparkle, and it took an 83rd minute strike from Fernando Torres to grab the win. In their following game against Middlesborough, it was two late goals from Jamie Carragher in the 86th minute and an injury time winner from Steven Gerrard which kept their 100% record intact.

The last league game before the International break was a dour 0-0 draw against Aston Villa, in which Liverpool, without Gerrard and with Torres picking up an injury, failed to even have a shot on target during the entire 90 minutes, and with a strike force of Keane and Torres, a football bet of no strikes on target from Liverpool would have yielded high dividends.

It is also looking like Liverpool will have to do without their inspirational captain Gerrard, for this game after he had to withdraw from Fabio Capello’s England Squad through a groin injury. And without that spark in midfield Liverpool could struggle to contend with United’s potential trio of Scholes, Carrick and Anderson. Scholes has certainly provided spark in recent fixtures between the two sides in recent years, having scored in the Old Trafford meeting in 2006, and then getting himself sent off in the return fixture at Anfield in March 2007.

As you expect in a match that involves the two biggest clubs in the country, Scholes’ dismissal at Anfield hasn’t been the only flashpoint in recent years. Spread betters will be interested to know that in the last two seasons, there have been 17 bookings and 2 sendings off, including Mascherano’s breakdown at Old Trafford in March. They will also like to know that in the last four meetings at Anfield there have been 18 bookings and 2 sendings off.

As mentioned earlier United have a fantastic record against Liverpool in recent years taking 16 points out of a possible 18 from their local rivals.

In 2005, in another early season meeting, the sides drew 0-0 in a drab Sunday lunch time affair, with the only notable occurrence being the last ever appearance in a United shirt by Roy Keane.

Fast forward to January 2006 and another drab affair, this time at Old Trafford, was heading for a scoreless draw before United grabbed a late winner through a powerful Rio Ferdinand header to send the United fans into raptures and prompting Gary Neville to run the length of the field to celebrate infront of the travelling Liverpool fans. This occurred after Djbril Cisse had missed a relatively easy chance for Liverpool early in the second half.

October 2006 saw Liverpool travel to Manchester eight points behind United, and by full time they would be 11 points further back. Offering little threat throughout the game, they fell behind to a Paul Scholes strike on the half hour, before Rio Ferdinand made the game safe with a sweet left foot volley.

In March 07 United travelled to Merseyside with a nine point lead over rivals Chelsea, but were second best for most of the contest, with Edwin Van Der Sar having to make some big saves during the game and Liverpool having a Craig Bellamy goal disallowed on the hour mark. Then after Scholes had been dismissed in the 86th minute, United grabbed the win through a John O’Shea strike, after Reina had spilled a Ronaldo free kick. In hindsight it was probably the result that clinched United the title.

Last season United grabbed another double over Liverpool. First in December, Argentine Carlos Tevez grabbed the winner just before half time after turning in a Wayne Rooney centre. In a match dominated by United’s centre-half pairing of Vidic and Ferdinand, Liverpool couldn’t break down United’s back line and their supporters were again left frustrated.

Their luck didn’t change much in the return fixture, although their performance certainly didn’t merit any rewards on this occasion as United stormed to an easy 3-0 victory through a Wes Brown header and, after Javier Mascherano was sent-off, late strikes by Ronaldo and Nani sealed the win.

With United heading to Anfield, not only as Champions of England, but also as Champions of Europe, it is sure to be a raucous atmosphere as the Kop tries to spur their team on to an overdue victory over their biggest rivals. This is the happy season for football spread betters who are all game for the biggest game of the season with sparks flying all around.

England Wayne Rooney to Watch His Foul Language in the World Cup

Footballers must be aware of their language on the pitch during World Cup 2010. The England team striker will have to be extra careful as he is infamous for his swearing in English Premier League games. Indeed, this is not the first time officials will be looking out for bad mouth footballers. Wayne Rooney was sent off during a friendly game against another local South African football club.

The referees in the last England Vs USA game were astute to any swearing in English. The Brazilian referees were given crash courses on the use of profanity in English before the game in order to keep potty mouth players under control. We all know that it is common for football players to swear, so referees will only be penalising footballers that go above and beyond in their swearing, which Wayne Rooney is the likely candidate. All World Cup referees have been given directions to book any players who swear at them and if appropriate, they will send the player off the pitch. There were also rumours that FIFA had sent a list of English swear words to world cup referees for quick reference.

Most people will acknowledge that Wayne Rooney is a fantastic player because of his fiery temper. Steven Gerrard, the England team captain said that Rooney is always on the edge and that is just the type of player Rooney is. Rooney is said to be inclined to listen to Gerrard due to their similar origin from Liverpool Football Club. Gerrard’s role as the team captain will be absolutely vital in keeping Rooney focused on the pitch and to keep communicating with the fiery tempered striker.

Rooney will have to be on guard and not slip his tongue during the World Cup playoffs. In fact, during the England Vs USA game, Rooney seemed to have kept his use of colourful language to a minimum even though he still showed a fiery facial expression to the referee when he was tackled by the opponent. This is certainly a good start and hopefully he will keep at it.

As stated before, most football players tend to swear during the game, be it in English or any other language. However, as the English Premier League is the most broadcasted football league in the world, English players’ conduct has been under close observations by many officials. With English language firmly established as the international lingua, the English swear words have also become widely used by many people to a point even those who do not speak the language can swear in English. A good example is the F-word being one of the most well known English words around the world, be it in Asia or Africa. This is not surprising at all when Hollywood movies usually feature a few F-words in their dialogues. The F-word has also taken on a cool image amongst the younger generation.

That said, there is still a way around this problem for Wayne Rooney, or for all English speaking football players for that matter. If you are going to swear, just make sure you choose a different language other than English.
