A World Cup Without The Wags

With only weeks to go to the World Cup 2010, pressure is high within the England team. England’s manager, Fabio Capello, has been known to voice strong opinions on the WAG circus that invaded the German spa town of Baden Baden in summer 2006.

Whilst the players were training and earning lump sums for their finest football efforts, the WAGs (wives and girlfriends) were reported to have spent almost £60,000 between six of them in the space of an hour and they weren’t picking up birthday gifts, that’s for sure!

So will the WAGs be allowed to travel to South Africa to watch their nearest and dearest compete in the biggest tournament in the world of football? Or will they be forced to sit at home and watch their husband or boyfriend on their plasma screen?

Steven Gerrard, England’s stand in captain, couldn’t have picked a better way to get himself in Capello’s good books. He’s announced that his wife will not be staying with him in South Africa, not at least until the semi-finals stage. Whether having the wives and girlfriends staying with them has an impact on their performance or not, Capello has been clear by stating that the team’s focus should be on football. It would be hard for any boyfriend or husband to keep focussed when they know their better half is spending their hard earned cash on shoes and a handbag the size of a kitchen sink.

With the recent scandals in the premier league, it’s not difficult to see why Capello has such strong views on the wives and girlfriends’ presence at the World Cup. John Terry has been stripped of the captaincy following a public ordeal with Wayne Bridge and his ex-girlfriend. Rio Ferdinand is said to be following Terry as a captain if he can recover from a back injury in time. England’s team should be united and working together, the pressure is huge without any personal dramas to deal with so may be its only right that the wives and girlfriends have to stay at home, and hope that England make it into the semi finals.
