Steven Gerrard

Pros: Dynamic character who relishes his captain’s status at Liverpool. Could be similarly inspirational for England.
Cons: Another whose body is letting him down, having suffered a series of niggling injuries. Form has slumped, along with Liverpool’s, this term.
Odds: 7/2

Wayne Rooney

Pros: Capello’s talisman is growing in stature by the week. Has passion and commitment by the bucketload and has put his youthful indisrections behind him.
Cons: Still possesses a volcanic temperament which could count against him. And would his all-action game suffer if he was burdened with the armband?
Odds: 10/1

Rio Ferdinand

Pros: Respected, experienced and has done the job before, for both club and country. Unlucky to have been edged out by Terry in 2008.
Cons: Chronic injury problems have disrupted his season and mean he is not a certain starter in South Africa.
Odds: 10/1

David Beckham

Pros: Highly unlikely but if Capello wants a rock-steady stop-gap, Beckham’s impeccable PR credentials and unabashed patriotism make him the ideal choice.
Cons: His last spell as captain ended messily, with a tearful resignation, and his place in the squad, let alone in the team, is a matter of fierce conjecture.
Odds: 14/1

Frank Lampard

Pros: A guaranteed starter this summer, with fitness never an undue concern. Has a squeaky-clean image, by England standards at least.
Cons: Not quite as friendly with Terry as many believe, but would be reluctant to disrupt the dynamic which fuels Chelsea’s success.
Odds: 20/1

Steven Gerrard would be favourite to replace John Terry as England captain
